I'm a new part-time student, how do I apply for a tuition fee loan?

New part-time or Open University (OU) students can now apply for a tuition fee loan by downloading and completing a Part-time Tuition Fee Loan application form (PTL here)

What do I need to apply for student finance?

To prevent any delays in your application being processed please ensure you provide the following:

your signature on the application

• the date beside your signature
• the correct details for your course
• the correct Tuition Fee Loan amount you are applying for
• either your in date UK Passport details or your original Birth Certificate with an accompanying declaration form

I'm a returning part-time student, how do I apply for finance?

Continuing part-time students will be contacted by Student Finance England around the middle of August.

Can I apply for a Maintenance Loan for part-time study?

No, Maintenance Loans are not available for part-time courses.

Part-time or OU students starting a course from 1 September 2012 can apply for a Tuition Fee Loan. Part-time students can also apply for Disabled Student' Allowances (DSAs). OU students must apply to OU for DSAs

If you started your course before 1 September 2012 you can apply for Fee and Course Grants based on household income and course intensity. These grants don't need to be paid back.

Will the Tuition Fee Loan be paid direct to me?

No your Tuition Fee Loan will be paid directly to your university or college on your behalf.

I'm in the second year of a part-time course can I apply for a Tuition Fee Loan?

No. As a returning part-time student you will not be eligible to receive a Tuition Fee Loan from Student Finance England. You can still apply for a non repayable Fee Grant of up to £1230, or the actual fee charged if less, to help with your tuition fee costs instead. The amount that you will be awarded depends on your household income and your course intensity.

What other financial support might I apply for?

If you have a disability you may be entitled to claim Disabled Students' Allowances (DSAs) from Student Finance England while studying. DSAs can help with the extra costs you may have in relation to your course as a direct result of your disability, long term health condition, mental-health condition or specific learning difficulty.

Can I apply for Childcare grant if I'm studying part-time?

No, part-time courses do not qualify for childcare grant support.

I'm a returning part-time student but I have not previously applied for student finance for my current course. Can I apply for a Tuition Fee Loan

No as you are continuing on a part-time course you will be eligible to apply for a Fee Grant and a Course Grant based on household income. The amount of Fee Grant you will be awarded also depends on the intensity of your course.

What is course intensity?

Course intensity is how long it takes to complete your part-time course compared to the equivalent full-time course. So, if your course takes six years to complete and the full-time equivalent takes three, your course intensity will be 50%. Your course intensity can be different from one year to another.

I'm an EU student starting a part-time/Open University course after 1 September 2012. Can I apply for a Tuition Fee Loan?

Yes, EU students can also apply for repayable Tuition Fee Loans by completing an EU Part-time Tuition Fee Loan form EUPTL1 .
