Confirmation of household financial commitments for dependants grants

If you applied for a Childcare Grant, Adult Dependants Grant or Parents Learning Allowance during academic year 2016/17, we will write to you to confirm and finalise your household financial commitments.

What is Finalisation?

Finalisation is the process carried out at the end of the academic year for all students who’s course started prior to A/Y 13/14, have received Grants for Dependants (GFDs) and who have a partner/spouse or another adult dependant to check that they have received the correct entitlement – the amount can rise, fall or stay the same. (Parents’ Learning Allowance, Childcare Grant and Adult Dependants’ Grant are all classed as ‘Dependants’ Grants).

From 13/14 the Finalisation process changed and we no longer need to finalise income. However, students who started their course prior to this A/Y remain entitled to submit household financial commitments and are subject to the Finalisation process until the end of their course.

We send out letters in September, January, April and July. If your course started in September 2016, we send you a letter in September 2017 to confirm your household financial commitments over the academic year.

Financial Commitments Evidence

You need to provide evidence of your financial commitments for each payment made in each month of the academic year.
We will only accept the following types of evidence:

  • bank statements showing every payment made. These are to be annotated and not highlighted as highlighter pen can make scanned copies unreadable
  • statements/signed letters from providers detailing the actual amounts paid to them in the academic year - this can be either the monthly figures paid or just one figure giving the total amount
  • receipts, clearly showing purpose and date
  • for child maintenance we will accept a letter from whomever the child is living with to confirm the amount they received in the academic year. This can be either the monthly figures or just one figure of the total amount or payslips showing deducted maintenance
  • where a customer wishes us to consider a financial commitment we have previously not considered, we need evidence that this started before the start of their course, with their continuous payments throughout the academic year
  • we do not accept payment schedules as evidence of any payments made e.g. Council Tax bills.

We only require copies of all evidence - not original.
